  • 19.07.2020

Every year since 1972, June 5 is celebrated around the world as World Day environment (World Environment Day), and in Russia on the same day they celebrate the Day of the Ecologist, dedicated to every person and organization that considers environmental protection their goal.

In 2017, the slogan “I am with nature” became the motto of World Environment Day. Canada is the host country this year, and the theme of the holiday is the unity of man with nature.

“Being away from home or in the wilderness gives us the feeling that we are not just a separate person, but part of something much larger. Almost everyone who has ever embarked on a nature trip has instinctively felt it. That is why, on World Environment Day, we call on everyone to feel this closeness again, get out of the house, connect with nature. Go for a hike in the hills, cycle in the woods, or swim in the lake on 5 June. It doesn't matter how, but you must get closer to nature! And not only on June 5th, ”says the head of the UN Environment Program Eric Solheim.

On the official website of World Environment Day, an interactive map of the world with events and promotions dedicated to the holiday is presented. Everyone can join an already created event or create their own. The organizers also urge to share photos or videos of your favorite corners of nature with hashtags on social networks #WorldEnvironment Day (#WorldEnvironmentDay) and #YasNature (#WithNature).

Before the Day of the Ecologist, which is celebrated in Russia on World Environment Day, in Khabarovsk "In harmony with nature", dedicated to the centenary of the protected system of Russia. 23 reserves and national parks in the south of the Far East presented their specially protected natural areas at the festival.

“The festival in Khabarovsk was the culmination of the“ Zapovednaya Volna ”marathon, which swept in the year of the 100th anniversary of the protected system of Russia across all reserves and national parks from the source to the mouth of the Amur. It is very important to educate people about the role and importance of nature reserves in nature conservation. The festival helped to show the attractiveness and usefulness of our reserves and national parks for people, to reveal their tourism potential, ”says the coordinator of PA projects of the Amur branch of WWF Russia, secretary of the Coordination Board of Directors of nature reserves and national parks in the South of the Far East Anna Barma.

In 2017, several new specially protected natural areas will be created in Russia, as well as a mechanism has been developed to attract private funds to the creation of tourist infrastructure, says the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation Sergey Donskoy... According to him, this will allow starting the implementation of pilot projects for the development of ecological tourism in the Baikal territory, mountainous Altai and the Caucasus, and by 2025 increase the attendance of the country's national parks by three times.

On Ecologist Day, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation announced the start of the All-Russian competition for journalists "In Harmony with Nature". The ministry will recognize the best journalists, photographers, videographers covering "the topics of the country's natural resources, human-nature interaction, biodiversity conservation, as well as green technologies in various spheres of life."

World Environment Day, the largest annual event dedicated to nature conservation, is celebrated on June 5 - the UN General Assembly established a holiday in 1972.

World Environment Day is the most important day for raising awareness of environmental issues, which since its inception has become a global information platform and is widely celebrated in more than a hundred countries around the world.

History

The date of the celebration was not chosen by chance - on this day in Stockholm (Sweden) the UN Conference on the Human Environment was opened.

The conference adopted a declaration containing 26 principles by which all states should be guided in their activities aimed at protecting the environment and rational use of natural resources.

It was 45 years ago that it was proclaimed for the first time that the protection and improvement of the environment for present and future generations is the primary task of mankind. And seven months later, the UN Environment Program (UNEP) was approved by a resolution of the UN General Assembly.

UNEP, as the main UN body for the environment, develops a global environmental program, promotes the implementation of the environmental component of sustainable development within the UN system, advocates for the protection of the natural environment of the world.

The Governing Council, the governing body of UNEP, composed of representatives from 58 countries, meets annually. The programs are funded by the Environment Fund, which is formed from voluntary contributions from governments through trust funds and a small allocation from the UN regular budget.

Why did they establish a holiday

Human activities adversely affect living organisms, plants, landscapes, water bodies - soil, atmosphere, rivers and seas are polluted, and human health, economic prosperity, and quality of life directly depend on the environment.

And in order to draw the attention of governments, society, industrial enterprises to topical environmental problems, they created this international holiday.

World Environment Day is one of the main ways for the United Nations to draw global attention to environmental issues and to stimulate political interest and action.

Environmental protection is a system of state and public measures that are aimed at the harmonious interaction of society and nature, the preservation and reproduction of existing ecological communities and natural resources in the name of living and future generations.

Today environmental problems are among the most important and determine the level of well-being of the entire world civilization.

Often the gifts of nature are difficult to assess in monetary terms. Like clean air, they are sometimes taken for granted, at least until they run out.

Nonetheless, economists are developing ways to estimate the multi-billion dollar value of many so-called "ecosystem services", from the benefits of insects pollinating fruit trees in California's orchards to recreation, health, and spiritual cleansing from a hike to the Himalayan Valley.

Where is celebrated

Every year, official World Environment Day celebrations are held at different countries... The attention given to the host country helps to highlight the environmental problems it faces and to support measures to address them.

In 2017, Canada took over the celebration - World Environment Day became an important part of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the country. As part of the celebrations, Canada has offered free admission to all of its national parks throughout 2017.

In total, in 2017, more than 1,288 events were planned around the world. Canada, where the main events were held, chose the theme of the 2017 day - "Man and nature: unity in the city, on earth, from the poles to the equator".

The topic is dedicated to the unity of man with nature, encourages us to appreciate its importance and protect our common planet Earth, and also invites us to think about why we are part of nature and our dependence on it.

As noted

Traditionally, on this day, events are held on landscaping areas and planting trees, shrubs, garbage is removed. The purpose of the events is to remind people that everyone can do their bit to protect the environment, take care of our common planet and a safe, green future for the world.

Since the commemoration began in 1972, people in many countries have hosted thousands of activities, from cleaning around their homes, planting trees, to fighting wildlife crime.

On this day, conferences, round tables, presentations, drawing contests, colorful shows and performances and so on are held. Environmental organizations hold actions - activists of social movements draw people's attention to pressing environmental issues through demonstrations, protests and flash mobs.

Educational lectures, seminars, thematic classes are being arranged, hearings are held on the reduction of pollutant emissions. Educational institutions discuss ways to treat natural resources with care.

Documentary and feature films about nature are broadcasted on television. On this day, people who have made a significant contribution to the protection of the environment are always honored.

The events are attended by representatives of government agencies, charitable organizations, social movements, foundations, scientists, researchers, experts in the field of environmental safety, teachers of specialized specialties of universities, students, and so on.

In protected areas - reserves and national parks, excursions, environmental education programs and environmental actions are held. All events are aimed at educating the public on environmental issues, awakening people's desire to preserve and protect flora and fauna.

On World Environment Day, more than 100 countries around the world host environmental events and actions.

Ecology focuses on life processes and adaptation, energy in living communities, the ultimate growth and development of entire ecosystems, and how biodiversity manifests itself in the environment.

The ecosystem can be as small as a puddle in your backyard, with only a few organisms interacting with each other. Or it can be as big as a forest with a huge number of interacting organisms. Ecologists - scientists who study interactions in ecosystems, are discovering many new things.

One of the main activities of organisms in an ecosystem is the search for energy. All living things in an ecosystem need energy to survive. All parts of the ecosystem work together. Processes are highly dependent on natural cycles. Ecosystems are constantly changing.
