The Bulgarian coast is the eastern border of the country and stretches along the Black Sea coastline for more than 400 km. Cape Emine divides the territory of the Black Sea Bulgarian coast into two parts: northern and southern.

The northern part attracts the attention of tourists who prefer active leisure, who are fond of rock climbing, mountain biking, surfing or extreme rafting on rough mountain rivers, with its steep cliffs, rocky headlands that reach about 60 m in height. The southern part of the coast is gently sloping, known for its wide golden beaches.

The geographical orientation of the beaches to the east, towards the rising sun, makes it possible for tourists and travelers to sunbathe in the morning. A characteristic feature of the beaches is a slight fluctuation in the water level at ebb and flow, moderately salty water compared to the Mediterranean Sea. The shallow depth of the beaches here allows families with children and the elderly to relax. The mild climate ensures the length of the beach season, which lasts from May to October.

Popular seaside resorts

The central resort town of the South Coast is the city of Burgas, its territory stretches across Cape Kalmakra to the town of Rusalka in the very south. Sunny Beach
The huge advantage of Sunny Beach (Slanchev Bryag) is an almost continuous 8 km long sandy beach with a width of 100 m. To this we add a convenient position behind Cape Emine, which serves as protection from strong currents, and a shallow, very gradually increasing depth near the coast.
In the early 1950s. the development of this resort was undertaken by prominent Bulgarian architects. Then the sand dunes were still surrounded by dense forest and swarmed with snakes. In order to get rid of poisonous snakes, hedgehogs were released on Sunny Beach, specially caught all over Bulgaria, and after a short time the beach was free of snakes. Bungalows scattered in the forest became the first refuge for tourists, and later there were hotels. But only a general tourist boom in the 1970s and 80s. has turned Sunny Beach into the largest seaside resort in Bulgaria with 150 hotels and 45,000 accommodations. By now, almost all hotels have been reconstructed and meet the highest requirements for the level of comfort and service. If you allow yourself to directly compare Sunny Beach with Golden Sands in the north, this resort is more dynamic and, perhaps, more hippie.

In any case, it is much more extensive, so bicycle rickshaws and scooter and mountain bike rentals, of which there are many along the carefully manicured waterfront, have good income. Even the police in Sunny Beach use bicycles. Several tourist trains run from the southern part of the resort to the northern line of hotels closest to the sea. Large hotels have taxi ranks; however, drivers rarely turn on the taximeter, and the price is usually negotiated verbally. Inexpensive city buses run along a street that runs north, parallel to the hotel zone.

The beach here is wide, with fine sand and well maintained. In the center and on the south side, it is surrounded by high sand dunes. In the north, unfortunately, the same dunes were destroyed during development. Sun loungers and umbrellas create comfort and coolness, and every stretch of the beach has eateries, drink kiosks, a restaurant and a rental shop for all kinds of water recreation props. There are pedal boats, motorcycles, bananas, huge lifebuoys, and so on and so forth. On some sections of the beach, massage therapists work on sunbeds under awnings, on others they just walk among vacationers and offer their services on the spot.

Hotels are located along the coast in several rows. On the first line, where there is a good view of the sea, there are luxury hotels. On the second, third and in some places even on the fourth line, housing is simpler, but much cheaper, calmer and greener: after all, Sunny Beach, like other Bulgarian resorts, is replete with beautiful old trees. Supermarkets provide holidaymakers with drinks, treats and newspapers. Hotel employees turn a blind eye to the fact that guests are buying cheaper drinks outside the hotel.

Promenade
The promenade in the afternoon and evening turns into a huge stage for shows. Many bars and restaurants have open-air bands; youngsters crowd around tattoo and piercing parlors or bungee towers, while children test their dexterity at rodeo machines or jumping rope. On the shelves, you can buy T-shirts, sports tights, branded jeans, mobile phones and computer games - of course, everything is fake, but at ridiculous prices. When, in the midst of this confusion, an archaic figure of a gypsy with a bear also appears, you cease to understand what time you are in. The training of brown bears in Bulgaria is not prohibited, but the fame of thieves and fraudsters has been fixed for the gypsies, and the police invariably drive them away.

The center of Sunny Beach is located near the Kuban Hotel, quite precisely in the middle of the hotel zone, which stretches along the beach. Here guests can find a post office, a bus stop, a bank and many boutiques selling counterfeit branded clothes. Completing this set are shops and CD-ROM kiosks, American fast food businesses, trendy bars and discos modeled on those in Ibiza, and a water park. Travel agencies offer short and long distance excursions, fish picnics and a Balkan wedding. But, as a rule, it is better to book such excursions directly at the hotel or from the representative of the company that organized your trip to Bulgaria. Experience shows that the offers of "free" guides are not always as good as it seems at first.

Excursion program
The most popular family excursions in Sunny Beach include a visit to the Dolphinarium in Varna, a jeep safari or a ride on the Monster-Truck along the slopes of the Balkan Mountains. A truck with huge tires on wheels and benches in the back makes dizzying ups and downs against the backdrop of a serene rural landscape, until all passengers are powdered with a thin layer of dust. The trip ends with an abundant barbecue on the lake. No less popular among tourists is a one-day boat trip to "Robinson Beach", where Robinson and Friday are waiting for the guests and arranging games and performances for them. There are two-day tours: one introduces vacationers to the capital of Bulgaria Sofia and the Rila Monastery, the other is aimed at Istanbul, which is not so far away. Day tours include excursions to the gorges and villages of the Balkan Mountains, along the southern coast or to the Valley of the Roses, where the raw materials for the precious rose oil are collected in May-June.

Saint Vlas
The resort town between Sunny Beach and Elenite is named after the nearest village, located a little higher on the slopes of the Balkan Mountains. Unlike the two neighboring settlements, Saint Vlas (Sveti Vlas) has its own architectural face. A striking example of this is the Manastira Hotel, built in the style of the Rila Monastery. Besides hotels, St. Vlas has villas and hotel-type houses, which are inhabited mainly by local and Eastern European tourists. The 1 km long sandy beach abounding with coves is not crowded. Although the village was founded in the 14th century, there is almost no historical information about it. Not far from the Manastira hotel you can see the ruins of a monastery.

Museum of Applied Arts Chifilka
The Chiflika Museum Village, surrounded by the spurs of the Balkan Mountains, lies not far from the village of Kosichino (on the road from Sunny Beach through Tankovo, Orizare and Dyulinsky Pass, about 25 km). There are signs in Kosichino towards the Museum of Applied Arts. Shoemakers, joiners and potters showcase their craft in several ancient houses around a common courtyard. In a small exhibition space, national costumes and woven carpets are collected. This complex includes a restaurant where you can taste the national Bulgarian cuisine, for example, lamb on a spit roasted over an open fire. Upon prior reservation for a group of tourists a fire dance of nestinars on coals can be performed.

Elenite
12 km east of Sunny Beach, on a green slope above a narrower, but excellent sandy beach, lies the fashionable Elenite Holiday Village, which operates on the All-Inclusive principle. Elenite complex consists of a comfortable hotel and a whole village of bungalows, recently renovated to European standards. In addition, there is a swimming pool, sports facilities and playgrounds. Unlike Sunny Beach, it has a more family-like and relaxed atmosphere. Those looking for active entertainment can take a bus to any of the neighboring large resorts.

Nessebar
Modern Nessebar (Nessebar) and the southern outskirts of Sunny Beach smoothly merge into each other. Along the coastline, the border between the two resorts is a large water park with a rather loud music accompaniment
However, there is one big difference between Sunny Beach and Nessebar: Sunny Beach appeared only in the 1950s, and Nessebar was founded by the Thracians already in the II century BC. e. New buildings, which have grown in our time, with residential areas, shops, restaurants, hotels and the Luna Park fairground are spreading inland. Opposite them, on a peninsula connected to the land by a narrow pier, the old Nessebar rises.

Church of the Almighty
The Church of Christ Pantocrator (Christ Pantokrator) houses an art gallery of local artists. Built in the 13th century, it is especially interesting for its facade, decorated in the Turkish style with decorative arches with colored ceramics and alternating rows of stone and brick, forming a striped pattern on the facade. A very ancient element, generally pagan, has been preserved in the decoration of the eastern apse: it is a decorative frieze with a swastika.

St. John the Baptist
Built in the XI century. the Church of St. John the Baptist (St. John the Baptist) with a powerful but almost devoid of decorations facade made of rubble. Remnants of frescoes have been preserved in the three-nave interior. This church also serves as a gallery; in the summer there are wonderful classical music concerts every week.

Ethnographical museum
There is a very interesting Ethnographic Museum in Nessebar. It was created in a typical National Renaissance house. Its second floor is decorated with fine wood carvings, while the first floor is built of rough stone and was intended for storage rooms and workshops.

St. Stephen's Church
This is the only church in which the multicolored frescoes of the 16th-17th centuries have been perfectly preserved. The frescoes depict biblical scenes, among which the scene of the Last Judgment stands out, and portraits of patrons who supported the church with their donations. In the vestibule there is an image of a medieval ship carved into plaster. The premises of the church are decorated with a magnificent iconostasis and a pulpit (18th century) with skillful carving and gilding.

Captain's house
The old captain's house (Kapetanska Sreshta) of the 19th century, located high above the port of Nessebar The rooms on the first floor lined with dark wood, where goods and tools were stored, are today used as restaurant halls on cold days. But it is much more pleasant to sit outside with a view of the Black Sea and the sparkling lights of the beach and hotel area of \u200b\u200bNessebar. True, the idyll is somewhat spoiled by the view of the bazaar at the bottom of the port, which from a height looks like a chaotic jumble of tent canvas, cardboard and scraps of plastic. On its shelves there is everything that is legally and illegally supplied from the nearest Turkey, as well as products of sewing factories in Bulgaria.

Beaches around Nessebar
The southern coast of the peninsula is surrounded in places by a narrow, in places wider pebble beach, where many of those working in Old Nessebar spend their lunch break. Unfortunately, the beach is not cleaned, so it is more suitable for a quick plunge into the water than for lying around here.

the red wide sandy beach is located along the spit that juts out to the south into the bay all the way to Pomorie. During the time of socialism, hotels and departmental rest houses were built here, most of which are still working for Bulgarian vacationers. In addition, a lot of people come to this beach for one day, so it is usually crowded here.
The third beach surrounds the bay between New Nessebar and Sunny Beach to the north of the new quarters. This beach is also busy in the summer months, although the rest there is greatly hampered by loud music from the Aqua Park, which is located nearby in Sunny Beach.

Guests of Nessebar can find the best conditions for swimming in Sunny Beach, where buses and tourist trains leave from the bus station in front of the city wall several times an hour. When the sea is calm, boats leave there every hour.

The inconspicuous town of Ravda is located 3 km south of Nessebar. This is an ideal place for those who would like to live or dine near the very expensive Nessebar for a reasonable price and still find a good beach. The local sandy beach very gently goes into the sea, which is especially appreciated by families with small children. Although Ravda is gradually catching up with Nessebar in terms of its tourist infrastructure, it still remains a small, cozy vacation spot for lovers of seclusion.

Pomorie
About 14 km south of Nessebar, at the southern end of Lake Pomorie, lies the modern town of Pomorie Lake Pomorie (Pomorie Jezero) is a lagoon separated by a sand dune from the sea, in which salt has been obtained by evaporation since ancient times.
Pomorie is still the most important supplier of salt for Bulgaria, and also provides the mineral resorts of Bulgaria with curative mud. Hotels in Pomorie also offer healing procedures. But the condition of these hotels may not please you entirely. Despite the modern hotel complex, which quickly grew here literally on the sand, the beautiful sandy beach of Pomorie now makes a rather depressing impression. However, tourists often drop in here, because it is in Pomorie that the best cognac in Bulgaria, Black Sea Gold, is produced and sold from the factory.

On the spit of the peninsula, among the new buildings, curious visitors can see several houses of the National Renaissance. Once in Pomorie there was the same Old Town as in Nessebar, but most of its houses were destroyed during a fire in 1906. On the western side of the Old Town there is the monastery of St. George, founded in the 12th century, but which has come down to us in the architectural appearance of the XIX century. This is the only monastery on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast where monks still live. Back at the end of the XX century. the pious brothers made their own wine, but since only a few monks remained here, the monastery vineyards were leased. Visitors who politely ask to let them in through the gate are usually allowed to view the monastery, which houses a small collection of 18th and 19th century icons.

The modern Salt Museum on the Pomorsko Lake tells about the technology of salt extraction and the healing properties of salt mud. Unfortunately, it is not always open.

Burgas
Being both a port city, a base for a petrochemical complex and a destination for charter flights for holidaymakers on the southern coast of Bulgaria, Burgas is very diverse. On the outskirts, guests are greeted by a city of modern panel blocks and industrial enterprises, and the city center with its vast Primorsky Park and beautiful pedestrian zone turns out to be charming and friendly.

The central square with the railway and bus stations, Garov square, is located in the southern part of the Old Town, southwest of the Primorsky Park. Pedestrian area on the street. Aleksandrovskaya, surrounded by tall trees, street cafes and shops, leads from the square to the north, past the high-rise hotel "Bulgaria", where the pedestrian zone of Aleko Bogoridi Boulevard with beautifully renovated classic houses begins on the right.
Here, the small Archaeological Museum displays a collection of finds from the Roman, Greek and Thracian eras.

Most of the guests of Burgas prefer to spend time in shops and restaurants. For a Bulgarian wallet, their assortment is too expensive, but this does not reduce the number of visitors. Tourists with a reserve of euros can shop here quite cheaply. Branded clothes, shoes and watches are usually authentic here, as many companies have branches in Bulgaria. But here they are much cheaper than in Western European stores. However, at the same time, you need to understand at least a little about the goods and be sure to check their quality and brand name.

Ethnographic Museum of Burgas
In a typical Bulgarian Renaissance building with a beautiful garden around this museum is located with a collection of national costumes, furniture and household items from the southern Black Sea region. Among the most interesting exhibits are the fearsome masks and kukeri fur costumes, with the help of which, in some regions, winter spirits are still expelled and fertility is invoked for the new agricultural year. There are also exhibited costumes of nestinars, fire walkers from the southern Bulgarian village of Bulgari.

In the north-east, st. St. Cyril and Methodius flows into the Democracy Boulevard, which leads along the Primorsky Park (Morska Gradina) back to the bus station. Many restaurants in Burgas offer to relax and eat in the cool of greenery or with a beautiful view of the sea, slightly spoiled, however, by oil tankers and container ships. It is better to refrain from swimming on the open beach of the park due to poor water quality.

Burgas lakes
The largest wet biotope in Bulgaria lies in front of the very gates of the port city.It consists of four shallow lakes: Poda, Mandrenskoe, Vaya and Atanas, where you can observe two thirds of the bird species inhabiting Bulgaria. This 9,500-hectare area also serves as a welcome resting place for flocks of migratory birds as they migrate along Via Ponticum. Hundreds of thousands of birds gather around Burgas in spring and autumn.

Poda Nature Reserve
The reserve is located 8 km south of Bourgas on the road to Sozopol. Through the telescopes on the roof, visitors can observe Dalmatian Pelicans, Red-necked Geese, Avocents, Corncrake and Gulls. During the migratory season, storks, spotted eagles and many other winged travelers gather here in flocks.

Chernomorets
In the resort of Chernomorets, which is a few kilometers north of Sozopol, there is a beautifully maintained city park and a wonderful city beach, which were chosen by guests of the local campsites, mainly local residents. There are several restaurants in the pretty town center.

Sozopl
Driving south along the coast to the artistic town of Sozopol (Sozopol), the road passes through an amazing landscape of lagoons and lakes.
This area, protected as a nature reserve and a bird nesting area, can only be visited as part of a guided tour. The abundance of birds will provide an opportunity for those interested in ornithology to observe rare species of waterfowl and migratory birds.

Like Nessebar, Sozopol consists of the New Town (east of the peninsula) and a spit that juts out far into the sea to the north, inhabited in Thracian times, on which stands the Old Town with architecture in the style of the Bulgarian Revival

St. John's Island
Right in front of Sozopol in the sea rises an island - the largest on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria. In the XIII century. an Orthodox monastery was built here, from which only ruins now remain. Today St. John's Island serves as a bird sanctuary, where, among other things, you can observe pygmy cormorants. From the pier on the street For a small fee, Kraibrezhna you can sail to the island by fishing boat.

Sozopol beaches
There are two city beaches in Sozopol, both located in the eastern part of the peninsula. One borders the park area, the other extends south of the hill on which the modern district of Harmanite stands, along the coastal road towards Tsarevo. Both beaches are wide, with fine sand, equipped with sun umbrellas and sun loungers and provide a full range of sports equipment for all kinds of water and beach activities.

So far, both beaches are firmly occupied by local residents, but every year more and more holidaymakers from other Eastern European countries are added to them. In the summer months it is almost impossible to find a free space - therefore we recommend visiting the beach of the Zolotaya Rybka camping in the north or Smokinia in the south. Almost all hotels in Sozopol are concentrated in Harmanite.

Smokinia beach
South of the city, the coastline with its beautiful, unspoiled sandy beaches is framed by copses. Tourists, mainly from Eastern European countries, set up their tents in the shade of trees at numerous, simply equipped tent sites. Located 4 km south of Smokinia, a gently sloping beach up to 100 m wide is open not only to tent dwellers and is very popular with young Bulgarians. In general, it is not forbidden to even put up a tent somewhere "wildly". The health and safety of visitors is ensured by a couple of unpretentious beach bars and swimming instructors, especially attentive due to the frequent strong waves.

Dunes
Dunes, a four-star resort that climbs the hills above the beach, is built in part in the local Renaissance style (Pelican Wing). Here, a wide range of sports and entertainment programs is a whole independent vacation world, where sports lovers and families with children can have an excellent vacation. But the real Bulgaria is practically not felt here. If you like to walk and watch birds, then in any case you will be satisfied, because the Alepu reserve, a country of lakes and swamps, where paths and bridges are laid for tourists, is very close. Thickets of sedges and reeds provide a safe haven for hoopoes, scops owls, red-headed diving and many other bird species.

Rpotamo river
5 km south of Dunes, the coastal road E87 makes a significant detour inland and crosses the Ropotamo River across the bridge. Shortly before the bridge, the road to the Arkutino pond with water lilies departs to the right. True, it is worth going to look at it only in June, during the flowering of water lilies. The beach of the same name with high dunes borders the river mouth. A rare for Bulgaria and strictly protected species of sand lilies grow here. The river, only 20 km long, on its way from the Strandzha mountains to the Black Sea flows through a valley with dense vegetation, where bizarre rock formations rise above oak and beech forests, overgrown with vines and ivy, for example, the Lion's Head (Lyavskata head).
Travel agencies organize boat excursions around Ropotamo, mainly on the section from the bridge to the mouth, some then go to the sea and go around the Serpentine (Zmiiski) island, which, like the mouth of Ropotamo, is a protected area. Along the way, you can spot local birds such as purple herons, pelicans and blue kingfishers. Sometimes you can even see sea turtles and snakes. A two-hour sea excursion can be booked at all travel agencies and hotels, or you can arrange with the boatmen right at the pier near the bridge.

Primorsko
The town of Primorsko, 22 km from Sozopol, was once widely known outside Bulgaria thanks to its International Youth Center. Here, young people from the Eastern Bloc countries spent their holidays in simple hostels.
After the collapse of the block, the center existed for several more years as a youth camp, then it closed, and in 2005, after a thorough reconstruction, it reopened. But the country dacha of the last communist president Todor Zhivkov, standing on a beautifully arched sandy shore north of Primorsko, has been perfectly preserved, despite all the changes. It is still used by the political elite.

To the south of Primorsko there is also a beautiful sandy beach, which stretches, sometimes interrupted by small rocky promontories, almost to the neighboring Tsarev, which is 15 km away. A dense belt of greenery frames this part of the coast and gives coolness and shade to the campsites lined up along the entire coast. The private hotel sector and tent sites are usually filled with Bulgarians and Czechs. But around the former Youth Center, 2 km south of Primorsko, tourism managers are beginning to actively explore the beaches and surrounding areas. For example, the four-star Magnolia club, built for the French, has already opened.

Kiten
From a purely Bulgarian vacation spot for working people with large departmental boarding houses, it has turned into a beautiful and comfortable resort, attracting, among other things, a foreign public. Numerous restaurants and boutiques vied with each other to beckon guests and shoppers.
To the north of Kiten there is a sandy beach, which is always quite crowded, while the more rocky and wind-open shores south of the village are favored by surfers.

Tsarevo and Ahtopol
The stretch of coastline from here to the south is considered the best windsurfing coastline in Bulgaria, and the Bulgarka Camping near Tsarevo serves as a meeting point for surfers. Tsarevo itself is somewhat reminiscent of the long-forgotten cities of the Wild West. Behind it, the E87 highway turns inland towards Malko Tarnovo, and only one very bumpy country road runs along the coast, still indented by capes and bays, further south to Ahtopol (Ahtopol). Picturesquely located on a peninsula, surrounded on both sides by beautiful bays, Ahtopol remains a relatively inexpensive resort, popular mainly among Bulgarian tourists.

Sinemorets
Soon this place will change, since the coast between Ahtopol and Sinemorets, located 8 km away, has become fashionable among the creative intelligentsia and wealthy citizens. Now it is being actively bought up and built up. In addition to the holiday homes, further south there is an all-inclusive enclave that only accepts tourist groups from Western Europe - the Bella Vista Beach Club.

The northern beach of Sinemorets is a strip of fine sand in front of the mouth of the Velika River. Here fresh and salt water are very close to each other. On the southern beach, rocky headlands are surrounded by sandy coves, and they are quite loyal to nudists.

Strandzha National Park
A mountainous, densely forested part of the mainland off the southern coast, the large Strandzha National Park (up to 700 m above sea level) is a wonderful but challenging place for hiking. The main purpose of day and multi-day excursions in the National Park is usually karst formations - caves, gaps and unusual weathered figures among the rocks.
Trips to cultural treasures such as churches and monasteries in small old villages are also popular.
The flora and fauna here is extremely diverse: in addition to wild boars and red deer, wolves live in this area, in spring black storks build their nests on bell towers, holly, laurel and rhododendron grow near water bodies. |
